A hissing sound may point to escaping air, steam or fluid. Possible causes include a damaged vacuum hose, cooling system leak or loose connection. If the sound is accompanied by steam, a rising temperature gauge or a sweet smell, pull over safely and turn off the engine. Never open a hot radiator cap or touch heated components, since pressurized coolant can cause serious burns. Record when the hissing occurs and arrange an inspection before continuing to drive long distances.
Grinding often means that two surfaces are rubbing without enough lubrication or that a component is badly worn. It may come from the brakes, transmission, wheel bearings or another moving part, even when it seems to be near the engine. Grinding while braking is especially important because worn brake pads may allow metal parts to contact the rotors. Continuing to drive can increase repair costs and may create a safety risk, so prompt professional attention is recommended.
A rattle that changes with engine speed or road conditions may come from a loose heat shield, exhaust component, engine mount or underbody panel. Some rattles are minor, but others can signal a part that is becoming loose or damaged. Notice whether the sound appears during cold starts, over bumps, at certain speeds or while accelerating. These details help the repair shop narrow down the source and avoid unnecessary testing.
